You can easily find large loaves (about 1lb) of French bread hot from the bakery for $1-$2. Ideally, use the bread the day you purchase it otherwise, the outside begins to harden and youโre left with a crunchy, crusty mess.
What type of bread is best for Garlic Bread?
I think it comes down to personal preference and expectations. I prefer fluffy French Bread over skinny baguettes because I find the baguettes too chewy. They tend to bake up tough and will leave you having to yank the bread away to take a bite.
As far as other breads, you can pretty much slather garlic butter spread on anything โ it just might not taste like traditional homemade Garlic Bread. You can use Italian or Artisan breads, sourdough, Texas Toast or thick pieces of bread and even hot dog buns!
Just be aware that the denser breads will result in a different texture. If you select smaller loaves or less surface area, just donโt use all of the garlic butter spread.

- Butter: use unsalted butter so we can control the salt. If you only keep salted butter stocked, then reduce the amount of salt in the recipe. Make sure your butter is softened and not melted or it is much harder to spread.
- Olive oil: use high quality olive oil. Olive oil adds another dimension of flavor and helps the butter sneak into every crevice. It also promotes crispy edges.
- Garlic: 3 cloves of garlic (about one tablespoon) infuses the Garlic Bread with garlicky goodness without being overpowering. Of course, if you would like just a touch of garlic, go with less, and if you want to be hit over the head with garlic, go with more.
- Salt and pepper: yes, even garlic butter spread needs salt and pepper! The salt enhances all of the other flavors and will be sorely missed โ so please donโt skip!

CAN I USE PRE-MINCED GARLIC?
I am a huge fan of shortcuts when it comes to cooking โ but when it comes to homemade Garlic Bread, you MUST use fresh garlic โ not pre-minced jarred garlic. Jarred garlic has its place, but unfortunately it can add a hint of sourness to the garlic butter spread and ruin the entire Garlic Bread.
Instead, the fastest way to mince garlic is with a garlic press. I like to give my pressed garlic a quick once over chop on the cutting board to make sure there arenโt any long strands before adding to the garlic butter spread.
How to Make Garlic Bread in Oven
STEP 1 – Preheat oven.ย 350 degrees F is the ideal temperature to warm the bread from the inside out.ย It gives the garlic butter spread time to melt and seep into the bread before the outside becomes too toasty.
STEP 2 – Cut the bread.ย Slice the French bread loaf in half horizontally using a long-serrated knife.ย Make sure the loaf is on a sturdy surface so it doesnโt slide around.ย You may even want to secure it with clean kitchen towel when slicing.ย If you are making the Garlic Bread for a special event and want it perfectly even, or you are making a large quantity, you can ask the bakery department to slice it for you.ย
STEP 3 – Make garlic butter spread.ย ย Add softened butter to a medium bowl followed by olive oil, garlic, parsley, basil, oregano, salt and pepper.ย If youโve forgotten to soften your butter ahead of time, you can microwave it for 15 seconds, but be careful microwaving any longer (you can do 5-10 second burst) or it can quickly melt.
STEP 4 – Slather bread. ย Evenly spread the garlic butter spread over both bread halves, taking care to spread all the way to the edges because that will help get the edges nice and crispy and carry the flavor from end to end. ย You can use a spatula or I like to use a butter knife.
STEP 5 – Bake. Place bread on baking sheet (if you havenโt already) and bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.ย You can line your baking sheet with foil for zero cleanup but it isnโt necessary.
STEP 6 – Broil.ย Move the bread to the oven rack 4-6 inches from the broiler.ย Broil for 1-2 minutes or until the edges are deeply golden.ย Keep a close eye on it because it can go from golden to burnt very quickly!ย
STEP 7 – Serve. Garnish Garlic Bread with fresh parsley if desired. Slice the bread into 2โ slices and serve warm.ย

- Use fresh bread. Take care your bread is freshly baked the same day or it will be extra crunchy and crumbly.
- Use real butter. Please donโt use margarine as you can taste the difference! For the ultimate decadence, use French style butter. It has a hint of tangy nuttiness and most importantly, it has less water which results in richer, creamier, butter. You may reduce the butter to ⅓ cup if desired and the bread will be tasty but just not as decadent.
- Use extra virgin olive oil. Use quality olive oil for maximum flavor.
- Use fresh garlic. Garlic powder or jarred-garlic donโt make for the BEST garlic bread. Jarred garlic can even taste sour due to the preservatives.
- Bake AND broil. The baking gives time for the garlic itself to bake as well as for the butter to sink about half way down the loaf. The broiling elevates the warm bread to hot bread with an enveloping toasty crust.

As usual, I do enjoy the thoroughness of your recipes. Talk about tips and recommendations! Yay!
I prefer to make the garlic butter by the bucket, then store whatever didn’t get used for immediate consumption in the refrigerator, not bothering with the bread in the first place. Takes up too much space, and what if I’m not in the mood for a baguette? Or what if I want a fresh baguette?? Besides, the longer the garlic butter ages in the refrigerator, the better it becomes!
My only additions would be the following: More cheese, cheese, cheese! At least the same amount of cheese when compared to the rest of the recipe (minus the bread, of course). Secret ingredient? MAYO! Yes! You heard me correctly! This adds more richness than the olive oil can contribute, and only one-quarter cup per 1 cup of butter is needed. Don’t tell me why, but I got this tip from one of the winners of the Gilroy Garlic Festival way too many years ago (at least thirty-five years, I believe!). Try it! It makes garlic bread amazing!
When I am in the mood for a rockin’ burger, I grill onion-potato hamburger buns with this garlic butter! Then I pan-baste my burgers in the skillet with just the garlic butter sans cheese. (Yes, I make a separate batch just for pan-basting!) Or pan-baste a steak! Better yet, add a large scoop onto steaming pasta with spring veggies! Talk about a killer pasta primavera without the hassles!

This garlic bread rocked! I had some fresh divine smelling french bread loaves from the Costco bakery to use so made this to go with a spinach, ricotta and Italian stuffed shells recipe I make. We inhaled the bread it was so good. Way better than any store bought spreads or frozen stuff.

Oh my! This is an incredible recipe for garlic bread! I will never buy store bought again. For a full loaf of French bread, I double the recipe. It is so easy to make and we just devour the oven baked bread. Thanks for another winning recipe!

After thoroughly reading the instructions I realized I made a couple mistakes when I made this garlic bread. First, my garlic wasnโt fresh chopped. I used the kind in the jar. Second, I used a cheapish olive oil from Walmart. The garlic bread was still very good, but I want to try it exactly as you recommend. Therefore I have a question. Where you mention using a good quality olive oil, there is a link to Colavita brand olive oil on Amazon. Did you specifically make a link out to Amazon to indicate that that colavita olive oil is a good quality olive oil that you personally recommend Or is your webpage just auto linking to a random Amazon product?
Another question, can I use a lighter tasting olive oil instead of extra virgin?

Hi Timma, I’m so happy you enjoyed the garlic bread! In this case it is auto-linking but I do think Colavita is a great all-around oil and won’t taste too heavy in this recipe. And yes, you can use a lighter tasting olive oil – totally personal preference here. (PS – sorry for the delayed response I’ve been on vacation and just catching up ๐ )

Very good garlic bread! I normally use the French baguette but never again. Using the soft wide bread is more delicious and easier to chew. I love that you can make the whole loaf and freeze some for later. Another winner!

Best Parmesan garlic bread we have ever made! Used a wide Italian bread loaf and it was soft on the inside but crispy on the top. As suggested, we baked and then broiled to get that perfect texture.
