The main ingredients in Yum Yum Sauce are pretty standard, but the recipe Iโm sharing with you today includes my unique spin to make it the very best, in my opinion.ย
Some recipes include melted butter, but none of those recipes have rave reviews 😉. ย The sauce is already rich and creamy on its own without the addition of butter which hardens as it cools.ย Instead, this recipe includes Greek yogurt instead of all mayonnaise, for a little extra tang to cut through the richness and lightens the entire sauce so itโs still creamy but not heavy.
This Homemade Yum Yum Sauce also uses ketchup instead of tomato paste and sugar.ย The ketchup adds the requisite sweet tomato tanginess without tasting tinny or overly tomato-y.ย Another important ingredient is mirin (rice wine), which adds tangy, sweet complexity and truly elevates this recipe.ย Lastly, the recipe is seasoned with smoked paprika for a touch of smokiness and sriracha for heat to cut through the rich tanginess.ย ย ย ย

While Yum Yum Sauce was made famous in America by teppanyaki grills, you likely wonโt find Yum Yum Sauce anywhere in Japan.ย In America and Canada, however, no Japanese Hibachi experience is complete without it!ย If youโre not familiar with hibachi-style, sometimes called teppanyaki cooking, it is a cooking method, like Benihanas, in which meat, seafood, and/or fresh vegetables are cooked on a super-hot metal cooking surface. ย The seared veggies and meat are always served with Yum Yum Sauce for dipping to bring all of the flavors together.
While it is uncertain who invented the famous sauce, chef Terry Ho is the first to bottle, market and mass produce the sauce as “Yum Yum Sauce.โ ย Chef Ho was serving the sauce at his Japanese teppanyaki restaurant in Albany, Georgia, and realized how very popular it was becoming.ย For years, patrons would come to his restaurants asking for 16 or 20 ounces of the sauce which Ho would distribute in Styrofoam containers.ย Seeing the potential, Ho started manufacturing and bottling the sauce on a mass scale, calling it โYum Yum Sauce.โย Today, it is sold in around 30,000 grocery stores nationwide and is growing by 10 to 15% every year.
