These crazy juicy Asian Burgers are bursting with flavor AND they can be on your table in minutes! The smothering of Hoisin Ketchup, Garlic Chili Mayo and Asian Slaw take this burger to a whole new level of deliciousness!
I love a good burger. A juicy, flavor packed burger with plenty of sauce. I want. I crave. I need.
Although I love hamburgers, I have only posted one other burger recipe on my site and all too often find my self in the guilty pleasure fast food line gauntlet. So these Asian Burgers were an especially good reminder at just how EASY burgers are to make at home and crazy fast to cook, not to mention 1000X more juicy and flavorful.
The beef is mixed with splashes of soy, hoisin, lime juice, basil and ground ginger and of course garlic and red onion. I also added Asian Chili Garlic Sauce which if you don’t want to buy just for this recipe – trust me – you will use it all the time! Its a staple at our house just like salt and pepper. It definitely has a kick, so use 1 teaspoon for very kid friendly, 3 teaspoons if you like heat. Either way, be prepared for a flavor explosion in every messy bite.
The hamburgers get slathered with Eats meets West Hoisin Ketchup which is simply ketchup whisked with hoisin, soy sauce and lime juice. And is simply delicious.
And to add a little crunch, whisk your angel hair coleslaw and matchstick carrots with rice vinegar, lime juice and a touch of sesame oil.
Cocoon it all in a bun smothered with Chili Garlic Mayo because few foodie things are sadder than a dry bun. And fewer bites are more cravilicious than Asian Burgers with Hoisin Ketchup and Garlic Chili Mayo. That’s one burger that’s worth staying home for.

Ingredients
- 4 hamburger buns
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Asian Hamburgers
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup panko bread crumbs
- 1/2 cup chopped red onion
- 1-3 teaspoons Asian chili garlic sauce (like Sambal Oelek)*
- 1 tablespoon reduced sodium soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon quality hoisin (Lee Kum Kee or Kikkoman)
- 1 tablespoon lime juice
- 1/2 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 tsp EACH salt, dried basil, garlic pwdr
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
Chili Garlic Mayonnaise
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon Asian chili garlic sauce (optional)
Hoisin Ketchup
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoons hoisin sauce
- 1 tablespoon reduced sodium soy sauce
- 1/2 tablespoons lime juice
Asian Slaw
- 4 cups angel hair coleslaw (may sub regular)**
- 1 cup Matchstick carrots
- 2 teaspoons rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon reduced soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon lime juice
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
Instructions
- Add egg to a large bowl and gently whisk. Add all remaining Hamburger Ingredients and mix with your hands just until combined. Form mixture into 4 equal patties roughly the size of your hamburger buns then make a deep impression in the middle of each patty with your thumb (this will help the burgers cook evenly). Refrigerate for 15 minutes.
- Meanwhile, whisk together all of the Hoisin Ketchup ingredients in a small bowl. Refrigerate.
- Whisk together Chili Garlic Mayonnaise ingredients in a small bowl. Refrigerate.
- Add coleslaw and carrots to a large bowl and toss with remaining Asian Slaw ingredients. Refrigerate.
- Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add patties and cook until brown and slightly charred on one side, about 3-4 minutes, flip, reduce heat to medium and cover. Cook an addition 3-5 minutes or to desired doneness.
- Spread hamburger buns with Chili Garlic Mayonnaise, top with Asian hamburgers, top with Hoisin Ketchup followed by Asian Slaw and dig in!

Jen, how can you do this to me??!! I haven’t even had breakfast yet and here I’m craving an Asian burger! The flavors sound amazing and I don’t think bland oatmeal will do it for me. 🙁 And the crunchy slaw? A perfect addition. Have a great weekend.
Jen says
hahaha – when you put it that way – bland oatmeal vs Asian burger – I can see how it won’t do! The flavors in this burger really are out of this world so I hope you can try it soon – even if not for breakfast 🙂 I hope you have a wonderful weekend as well!

A million food bloggers out there but YOU are my go-to every time! What would be an appropriate side dish to serve with this? Because I have a feeling it’s going to be requested around my household of eight MANY times 🙂
Jen says
your comment made my day, seriously so humbling to hear that – thank you so so much Kristen! I would serve a simple fruit salad or grilled pineapple or even Asian roasted broccoli. You could also make fries and double the Hoisin ketchup to dip them in – just a few ideas 🙂 I hope you love these!!!

My husband and I both work full time and go to school full time so it’s hard to find recipes that taste good and are quick to make for all the kids by the time we get home. This was perfect and the kiddos loved it too
Jen says
Oh my goodness, you guys are SO busy – I am so impressed! Bravo on all you are accomplishing – all that and still making homemade dinners – amazing! I’m so glad these fit into your busy schedule and everyone loved them! YAy!
Alex says
Hey Jen,
This recipe looks great and I’d like to try it out but I have one question… when you ask for angel hair coleslaw (or regular) are you referring to shredded cabbage or an actual pre-made coleslaw to be added to carrot and other ingredients? If it is a pre-made coleslaw, do you have the ingredients for that?
Jen says
Hi Alex, that is a great question! It is just the shredded cabbage. Enjoy!
Grace says
What would be a good substitute for the asian chili garlic sauce? I can’t get it where I live. Would siracha work? I also haven’t been able to find the low sodium soy sauce, just regular soy. How should I adjust the recipe to use regular soy? Thanks for your help as I’m looking forward to trying this!
Jen says
Hi Grace! I would reduce the salt in the burgers to 1/2 teaspoon if using regular soy sauce. You can definitely sub sriracha – I would do it to taste though as I am not suree the exact equivalent. I hope this helps, enjoy!
Amy says
I LOVED these AMAZING burgers!! I’ve made them twice now, and my entire family is hooked. These burgers are so tender, juicy, and delicious and we can’t get enough of them. I made double batches and haven’t had any leftovers yet. Great combination of flavors, I wasn’t super crazy about the slaw, so i omitted it the second time and wrapped my burger in lettuce to cut the carbs and get that crunch, super great. These are going to become a staple in my home. Thank you so much for this wonderful recipe.
Jen says
YAY! I’m so happy these are a favorite, thanks Amy! I also l love the idea of wrapping it in lettuce for the crunch – yum!
Steph says
Are these good on the BBQ too?
Jen says
Absolutely!
Emily Erickson says
My husband and I are making these for our supper club on Saturday night. I’m so excited! They look delicious!!! Trying to figure out what to serve as sides. Kinda stumped. Any ideas?
Jen says
So fun! Either of these salads would be fun:
https://carlsbadcravings.com/asian-pineapple-salad-with-peanut-coconut-dressing-recipe or https://carlsbadcravings.com/asian-salad-recipe/
Grilled pineapple or https://carlsbadcravings.com/fruit-salad/#jlR5cIUFkkTMZtSD.97
Rice seasoned with garlic, ginger, salt, pepper etc.
edamame, bok choy or other stir fried veggies
I hope a few of those ideas will help to get your wheels turning. Enjoy!
Emily Erickson says
Wonderful!!! Thank you!
Sarah says
These are so good! I’ve made them as directed in burger form, and in meatball form with ground chicken breast. For meatballs, we did bowls with the slaw and the mayo as “toppings” for the bowls containing meatballs over quinoa. Both ways were delicious and are trotted our regularly at my house. I love that each time I come to your site, I find something new and surprising.
Jen says
Thank you so much Sarah for taking the time to comment Sarah! I love hearing how you have used this “Asian Burger” recipe in so many ways! I’ve been inspired by your meatball version – I definitely need to try that soon!
Victoria Riccardelli says
I’m so excited to be making these soon. Do you think it would be okay to make the slaw in the morning and the burgers later in the day? I have a toddler so I try to prep as much as I can while she’s napping.
Jen says
Hi Victoria, I would whisk the wet ingredients together: rice vinegar, soy sauce, lime juice, sugar and sesame oil and then just toss it with the carrots and coleslaw an hour or so ahead of time or when you’re ready to serve. I just wouldn’t make it hours ahead of time so it still has plenty of crunch. Enjoy!
Victoria Riccardelli says
These were amazing!
Jen says
Thank you Victoria, I’m so pleased they were a winner!
Janr says
Making this for my wife’s birthday today. Thanks for the idea.
Jen says
You’re so welcome, enjoy! And happy birthday to your wife!
Charlie says
I have tried so many of your recipes and this one we had for dinner. This recipe is so so good. I would highly recommend to anyone. I cut the heat because of stomach problems but still used some for the flavor. I really wanted more heat but was delicious any way. Thank you again for another great recipe!
Jen says
Thanks so much Charlie, I’m so pleased this was another winner and that you’re enjoying my recipes!
Jenn Wraspir says
Oh Lordy! This recipe was so darn delicious. Messy, very messy, but in a good way. I was a bit taken back by all the ingredients for the burger, but having now tasted it, they were all necessary. The meat was so flavorful and so complex. I made this as an open face burger because I knew it’d be messy and even then I think I wore half the ketchup. This was a winner for sure.
Jen says
Thanks so much Jenn, I’m so pleased/relieved it was all worth it!
Debra Marsala says
Wow, I made this tonight and it was one delicious, juicy burger! I have added your recipe to my favorites list and will be making it again.
I did leave out the egg and Panko bread crumbs, because I never add them to any burgers I make. I left all the other burger ingredients as written.
Jen says
Thanks so much for the glowing review Debra, I’m so pleased they will be on repeat!
Sue Olsen says
This looks so good too…can’t wait to try it!
Jen says
Thank you Sue, I hope you love them!
Melissa Rogers-Obal says
Another winner in our Asian cuisine-loving house! I loved both the mayo and the ketchup, even though I typically don’t care for either, and the slaw made the whole thing seem healthy…haha! Served with sweet potato tater tots, and the whole family enjoyed. I’ve literally never made a bad recipe from you…keep them coming, please!
Jen says
That is the highest compliment, thank you so much Melissa! I’m so pleased you’re loving all my recipes including this one!
Lori says

Judi says
I have made this recipe several times and do not use the egg or breadcrumbs because it’s not something I do when making burgers, made everything else as suggested and these burgers are always great. I serve with sweet potato fries and extra hoisin ketchup…yum!
Jen says
Sounds delicious!
Gabrielle Jabs says

Delicious! The only thing I did different was use ground turkey! It was still amazing. I had 3 lbs and made two burgers for us and the rest into patties for future dinners. I did add a slice of havarti cheese and put on everything buns because that is what I had. Will of course do again! Thank you!
Jen says
You’re so welcome, I’m so pleased you loved it!
AZ Gal says
