Why This Burger Bowl Recipe is the best!

1. Perfectly seasoned beef: The beef is cooked in a hot skillet until beautifully browned and caramelized—not steamed—then tossed with the perfect blend of seasonings for juicy, crave-worthy flavor in every bite.
2. The burger sauce makes it: Creamy, tangy, and packed with flavor, the burger sauce ties all the ingredients together and tastes just like your favorite burger joint’s special sauce.
3. Loaded with texture, including steak fries! Every bite is loaded with your favorite deconstructed burger toppings, including crispy, fluffy, flavorful baked potato wedges that are stand-alone swoonworthy, bringing all the satisfaction of burger-and-fries night to one irresistible bowl.

Burger bowl Ingredients

Let’s take a closer look at some key ingredients you’ll need to make this recipe (measurements in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post):

  • Ground beef: I recommend 85/15 lean ground beef for the best balance of juicy flavor and minimal grease, but 90/10 works well too. You can also swap in ground turkey for a lighter option.
  • Cheese: Sharp cheddar is my favorite because its bold, tangy flavor pairs well with the savory beef and creamy burger sauce. I prefer cutting the cheese into small cubes rather than shredding it, for little pockets of creamy, cheesy goodness.
  • Fresh veggies: Crisp romaine lettuce, juicy tomatoes, and red onion add freshness, juiciness, and crunch. You can swap in pickled red onions.
  • Pile on the pickles: Their tangy crunch balances the richness of the beef and sauce. Use dill (my fav), bread-and-butter, or spicy, depending on your preference.
  • Burger sauce: Don’t skip! Creamy, tangy, and packed with flavor, it ties everything together and delivers that classic burger-joint taste.
  • Potato wedges (Optional): I use my fabulous recipe, but you can use frozen, baked fries as a shortcut.

How to make a burger in a bowl

Let’s take a closer look at how to make this recipe with step-by-step photos (full recipe in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post):

  • Step 1: Make Potato Wedges or use store-bought fries, following the package instructions. Toss the wedges in cornstarch, then in a spice-oil mixture, then bake until crispy.

  • Step 2: Make Burger Sauce. While the potato wedges/fries bake, whisk the sauce ingredients together and prep any toppings.

  • Step 3: Cook Beef. Sear the beef over medium-high heat in a large cast-iron skillet for 1-2 minutes per side, then break it up and add the spices. Cook and crumble until fully cooked through and deeply browned. Drain excess grease, then stir in the Worcestershire sauce.

Burger Bowl Recipe TIPS

•Let the beef brown: Add the beef to a hot skillet and let it cook undisturbed for a few minutes before stirring, so it develops a rich, caramelized flavor instead of steaming.
•Make them your own: The ingredient amounts are just a starting point—feel free to add more or less of any topping, sauce, or burger fixings to create your perfect burger bowl.
•Serve the beef warm: Warm beef over cool, crisp toppings creates the best contrast of temperatures and textures.
•Avoid assembling ahead: Fully assembled burger bowls can become soggy, so they’re best assembled just before serving.

Burger bowl variations

  • Switch up the cheese: Try Monterey Jack, Colby Jack, pepper Jack, Swiss, American, or blue cheese crumbles.
  • Add avocado: Creamy avocado pairs beautifully with the tangy burger sauce.
  • Caramelize the onions: Swap the raw red onion for caramelized onions for a sweeter, richer flavor.
  • Add some heat: Top with sliced jalapeños, pickled jalapeños, or a drizzle of hot sauce.
  • Load up the veggies: Add cucumbers, shredded carrots, sautéed mushrooms, bell peppers, celery, etc., for extra crunch and nutrition.
  • Western-style bowl: Top with barbecue sauce, crispy onions, bacon, and cheddar cheese.
  • Vegetarian: Swap the beef for plant-based crumbles or crumbled tofu.
