Long, long ago in my first month of blogging (February 2014), I shared Secret Ingredient Better Than Takeout Beef and Broccoli –  and you all agreed…

It is WAY better than takeout!   It continues to be one of my top recipes because it is just so crazy delicious.  So I decided it would be fun to make a grilling version because, lets’s be honest, who wants to make their favorite Beef and Broccoli over the stove in August and September – ugh!

These Beef and Broccoli Kebabs pack the same rich, savory, with a hint of sweet punch as their predecessor, but I am loving the cubes of steak – they are SO juicy, moist and savorlicious, your eyes will roll back in your head with every chew.  And the broccoli is perfection!  I wasn’t sure about grilling broccoli but it turned out amazing!  It is tender yet crisp and full of smokey goodness.  I tend to like my broccoli on the firmer side, so if you like really soft broccoli, you might want to steam them for a minute before grilling, but if you are like me, you will love them just the way they are.

These kebabs are a fun entertaining meal or family meal.  The only real time consuming part, as in all kebabs, is threading the skewers, so put your kids to work and the marinade to work, then you will have zero work left for yourself!

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds sirloin steak cut into 1 1/2-inch cubes
  • 5 cups broccoli florets with about 1″ stem
  • 1/4 cup olive oil plus more for broccoli
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup water

Marinade/Glaze

Instructions

  • Whisk Marinade/Glaze ingredients together in a medium bowl. Add ¼ cup to a large freeze bag along with ¼ cup olive oil and sirloin cubes. Marinate 2 hours up to overnight (the longer the better) in the refrigerator. Refrigerate remaining Marinade/Glaze separately.
  • When ready to cook, add broccoli to a large bowl and drizzle lightly with olive oil. Toss to coat. String beef and broccoli on skewers** piercing broccoli at the top of the stem, just below the floret.
  • Grease and preheat grill to medium high heat. Grill skewers until lightly charred all over, approximately 5 minutes per side. You can cheat and check a a cube for doneness.
  • Meanwhile, whisk remaining Marinade/Glaze with ¼ cup water and 1 teaspoon cornstarch, cover and bring to a boil on your grill (this can also be done on the stovetop). Once simmering, uncover and stir until thickened. Brush cooked skewers with Glaze. Serve warm with rice.

Notes

*Oyster sauce can be found in the Asian section of any grocery store.
**If using wooden skewers, soak for at least 30 minutes beforehand in water.
***Total time does not include marinating as this will vary upon individual.

These look amazing! And where in the world did you find curly skewers??

Thank you so much Shelley! The skewers were actually a Christmas gift from my mom years ago 🙂

Can I substitute another sauce for the oyster sauce? I don’t know if I can handle trying that and I know my family would cringe if they saw it in the pantry.

Hi Heidi! You can always buy vegetarian oyster sauce or I would try a mixture of half dark soy sauce and half hoisin sauce. I haven’t tried this personally so I can’t guarantee it will taste exactly the same, but should still be tasty! Let me know how it goes! Thanks!

Hi! I am new to your blog but have tried (and loved!) several of your recipes in the last few weeks. I just finished whipping up the marinade for this and I was a little confused, it says to add 1/2 cup marinade to the bag with the meat and oil and reserve the rest. However, the marinade was only 1/2 cup total…did i miss something? Please help!
