S’mores Dip Ingredients

This S’mores Dip recipe is made with only a handful of ingredients!  Let’s take a closer look at what you’ll need (full recipe measurements in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post):

  • Marshmallows:  You’ll need about 20 regular size marshmallows (the kind used for regular s’mores), and not mini marshmallows.  You will cut the marshmallows in half for the perfect ratio of chocolate to marshmallow deliciousness.
  • Chocolate:  Please ONLY USE Ghirardelli milk chocolate chips and not any other brands.  Ghirardelli has a higher percentage of cocoa butter than other brands so it melts seamlessly.  Other brands will leave you with stubborn grainy chocolate bits that refuse to melt. If you can’t get your hands on Ghirardelli, use the equivalent of chopped baking chocolate.
  • Heavy cream: Look for “heavy whipping cream” at the grocery store.
  • Corn syrup:  This works wonders at keeping the chocolate gorgeously silky smooth and dippable for a much longer period of time. You can omit it if you really are opposed, but the chocolate will thicken more quickly.

what goes well with s’mores dip?

S’mores Dip is tasty with anything that pairs well with chocolate!  I like to use a variety of fruits, cookies/treats and salty snacks.  Here are a few ideas, but don’t let this limit your imagination:

  • Graham crackers: Choose from honey, cinnamon, chocolate, gluten free, etc. for a more classic s’mores experience.
  • Fresh fruit: Strawberries are our favorite, but this dip is also tasty with bananas, pineapples and even oranges!
  • Cookies: There are so many cookies that pair well with this dip, so we go for a variety like Bischoff, biscotti, Nutter Butters, pirouettes (Pepperidge Farm French Vanilla is amazing), Milano cookies, vanilla wafers, gingersnaps, oatmeal cookies, peanut butter cookies, Oreos (any kind!), almost any Girl Scout Cookie such as Samoa’s or Tag Alongs (store brands work great too).
  • Treats:  Donuts, cream puffs, coconut macaroons, granola bars, etc.
  • Salty/savory snacks: Pretzels, potato chips, Ritz crackers, croissants and more!

HOW TO MAKE s’mores Dip

You are going to LOVE how easy this S’more Dip recipe is to make in just a few foolproof steps!  Let’s take a closer look (see full recipe in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post):

  • Step 1: Grease pan.  Generously butter a 9-inch cast iron skillet (or other baking dish).  This makes cleanup a breeze!

  • Step 2:  Add chocolate.  Add chocolate chips, heavy cream, and corn syrup to the skillet. Give the skillet a swirl to evenly distribute the cream.

  • Step 3:  Bake chocolate.  Bake at 400 degrees for 5 minutes.  This gives the chocolate a melting head start before we add the marshmallows.

  • Step 4:  Whisk chocolate.  Remove the pan from the oven, then whisk until the heavy cream is completely combined with the chocolate.  It’s okay if the chocolate isn’t completely melted at this point, although it will probably be close.

  • Step 5:  Add marshmallows.  Top the chocolate evenly with marshmallow halves.  I like to start in the center then spiral out from there.  It’s okay if there are some gaps because the marshmallows will expand a little in the oven.

  • Step 6:  Bake with marshmallows.  Bake an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the marshmallows are golden to your liking.  The marshmallows will likely puff up in places while they bake, but will deflate once removed from the oven.
  • Step 7:  Dip! Serve with desired dippers!

TIPS FOR making S’mores dip recipe

  • Use quality chocolate.  S’mores Dip is only as good as the quality of your chocolate so splurge a little and use Ghirardelli!  Less quality chocolate can become grainy.
  • Use corn syrup.   This makes a world of difference in the life of your silky smooth chocolate.
  • Use any 9-inch pan.  This recipe can be made in a cake pan, pie plate or a 9×9 inch baking dish.
  • Cut the marshmallows in half.  You can do this with a knife or kitchen scissors. If you don’t cut them in half, the marshmallows will puff up way too much!
  • It’s okay if the marshmallows poof.  The marshmallows can poof up a lot in the oven if they are packed together because they will trap in the steam.  To deflate them once out of the oven, make a couple slits around some of the marshmallows to let the steam escape.
  • Prepare dippers ahead of time.  While the dip is in the oven, or even earlier in the day, prepare the tray of dippers so the S’mores Dip can be enjoyed as soon as it’s pulled from the oven.
  • For a toastier finish: After the marshmallows are golden, turn the oven to broil for 30-60 seconds.  Keep a close eye on the marshmallows so they don’t burn!

possible recipe variations

  • Mix up the chocolate.  I used milk chocolate because traditional s’mores are typically made with Hershey’s milk chocolate bars, but you are free to use a combination of milk, semi-sweet, dark, etc. You can even combine milk chocolate and peanut butter chips.
  • Peanut Butter S’mores Dip:  Add a layer of creamy peanut butter to the bottom of the skillet before adding the chocolate chips.
  • Salted Caramel S’mores Dip:  Drizzle the entire dip once it’s out of the oven with salted caramel.
  • Mexican Inspired S’mores Dip: Add ½ teaspoon of cinnamon and a pinch of chili powder, chipotle chili powder or cayenne pepper.
  • Peppermint S’mores Dip:  Stir ½ teaspoon peppermint extract into the chocolate after it’s baked 5 minutes.  Add more to taste if you want a stronger peppermint flavor.
  • Toffee S’mores Dip:  Stir ¼ cup toffee bits (Heath Bits O’Brickle) into the chocolate after it’s baked for 5 minutes.
  • Candy Bar S’mores Dip:  After the chocolate has baked 5 minutes, either top it with any of your favorite crushed candy bars (Butterfingers, Snickers, Twix, Reese’s), or stir them directly into the chocolate.
  • Nutty S’mores Dip:  Add some crunch with chopped pecans, peanuts, almonds, cashews or macadamia nuts. Stir the nuts directly into the chocolate after it has baked 5 minutes.
  • Coconut S’mores Dip: Stir toasted shredded coconut directly into the chocolate.
  • Berries S’mores Dip.  After the chocolate has baked 5 minutes, top with a layer of mixed berries such as raspberries, blueberries and strawberries.

Recipe FAQs

Why is a s’more called a s’more?

S’mores is a contraction of “some more.” You can’t have just one, you have to have “s’more!”  Although the exact origins of s’mores are unknown, recipes for “Graham Cracker Sandwiches” began circulating in cookbooks and magazines in the 1920s.  The first documentation of them being labeled “s’mores” was in a Girl Scout pamphlet in 1927.  The pamphlet indicates the treat had been popular with Boy and Girl Scouts for quite some time.

What is S’mores Dip?

S’mores Dip is a dippable version of s’mores, with the ease of cooking indoors!  This recipe is made with chocolate chips combined with heavy cream to create a silky ganache on the bottom, topped with golden, toasty marshmallows on top, that all bakes in the oven. It’s perfect for digging in with graham crackers, cookies, or fruit!

How long do you bake S’mores Dip in the oven?

The dip will bake for a total of 15-20 minutes in the oven; 5 minutes with just the chocolate and heavy cream, then an additional 10-15 minutes with the marshmallows.  You’ll know the dip is done when the marshmallows are golden brown on top.

Can I make this recipe with mini marshmallows?

Yes, you can make this S’mores Dip with mini marshmallows. Simply use enough miniature marshmallows to fully cover the chocolate. The dip made with mini marshmallows will take much less time to bake.

Can this be served at room temperature?

This S’mores Dip is best served while the chocolate is still warm, within one hour of pulling from the oven.  After an hour, you can reheat the dip in the oven or even individual plates, if needed.

I don’t have a 9-inch skillet. What kind of baking dish can I use instead?

You can use a cake pan, pie plate or an 8- or 9-inch square pan for this recipe.

Can I make S’mores Dip in the microwave instead?

This recipe is not intended for the microwave.  You can make this recipe in a microwave safe dish in the microwave, but the marshmallows will not toast, only soften.  For a truly toasty topping, the oven is the only way to go!

What can I do with leftover s’mores dip?

This Smore’s Dip recipe is incredibly versatile!  You can warm leftovers and use it as a topping for ice cream, cake, or cheesecake.  It can also be whisked into hot chocolate, swirled into cheesecake, brownies, cheesecake or sweet bread, or poured into tart cups.

I know the marshmallows won’t brown but could these be done stove top only? I currently don’t have a working oven but would really like to make these. If so, lif off or on once the marshmallows are added? Thank you

    • Jen says

I think it would be better done in the microwave than the stove so the marshmallows can soften. If you don’t have a microwave, then I would cover the marshmallows so they can soften. Good luck!
