Its almost Valentine’s Day and love is in the air…or at least it will be after one bite of this incomprehensibly scrumptious breakfast – one that warranted an, “Are you kidding me?!” before Patrick even swallowed his first bite.

In addition to its heavenly flavor, this best ever French toast is so easy that you can print out the recipe, give it to your children, husband, etc. and tell them you want this for Valentine’s Day…because trust me, you want this for Valentine’s Day.

I am not usually the hugest fan of French toast.  I mean, I like it, but I prefer the texture of waffles.  But this French toast, is not just any French toast – its ANGEL FOOD CAKE French toast!  Which means pure awesomeness through and through.

Slices of angel food cake dipped in cinnamon batter and browned in sizzling butter yielding the perfect texture of toasted on the outside, light, airy and slightly sweet cake heaven on the inside.

Let me say that one more time – lightly air and slightly sweet cake heaven on the inside.

And then smeared with cream cheese and smothered with sweet, fresh strawberry decadence.  That strawberry decadence part – there are simply no words for its deliciousness – just pictures.

This angel food cake French toast is pointing its cupid arrow at you.  With one bite, it will fill your belly with love.

French Toast

  • 1 7″ store bought angel food cake
  • 4 eggs, whisked
  • 3/4 cups milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 1 Recipe Fresh Strawberry Syrup

Additional Toppings (optional)

  • cream cheese, softened
  • Powdered sugar

Instructions

  • Begin simmering Strawberry Syrup.
  • Meanwhile, slice angel food cake into 12-14 pieces, or to desired thickness. In a shallow dish, combine eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Dip half of the slices (or as many that will fit in your skillet) into the egg mixture, resting for a few seconds on each side. Add the coated slices to the heated skillet and cook until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes. Melt 1 more tablespoon butter in skillet and repeat with remaining slices.
  • Spread the cream cheese on the slices, and top with strawberry syrup and powdered sugar.

  11. Carolyn says

Thanks for the great recipe. We love French Toast for brunch. I was thinking this would make a great dessert. How would they keep if you made them earlier in the day to serve that night?

    • Jen says

Hi Carolyn, thanks for visiting my site! The French toast is best served warm and slightly toasted so I am thinking you would want to reheat the French toast on a cookie sheet in the oven until warm and then broil them lightly to slightly crisp the outside again. That should do the trick! Let me know how it goes :)!

  12. nicole says

  14. Chris says

Jen, just came across your blog and this amazing recipe. My husband loves angel food cake, to we are going to make this for his birthday breakfast! Yay! I’m thinking that since the angel food cake is fat free, and you are serving it with strawberries, it’s probably better for us than most fancy breakfast foods that we would go out for! (how’s that for logic?) 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing!

    • Jen says

Hi Chris, I am so happy you found my blog! How fun to make this for your husband’s birthday breakfast – a gift both of you can enjoy 🙂 And I love your logic! Plus anything eaten on your birthday (or celebrating someone’s birthday) totally doesn’t count, right? I hope your husband has a very happy birthday!!!

  15. joyce says

Just made this and it was wonderful. My husband will always order pancakes with fruit sauce when we go out. He had 2nds!

    • Jen says

  18. Nikita says

    Hi !

I tried the strawberry sauce and loved how it turned out. I have been following your posts regularly. Your pictures are evil ! They make me want to eat them up 🙂 . I like that all most of your recipes are straight forward. I cant cook to save my life but I try after reading your post. I can’t do fancy stuff.

Is ok to use white bread instead of the ones you have mentioned here ? Also, can i do the baking on regular tray with foil on it. That is the only tray I have.
My other baking tray is very small. After soaking the bread overnight, doesnt it become soggy ?

    • Jen says

Hi Nikita! Thank you so much for following along even with all my “evil” pictures 🙂 I am so happy you enjoyed the strawberry sauce and I love that you can easily follow my recipes – YAY!

As far as the recipe questions – I am wondering if you are referring to the Creme Brulee French Toast instead of this Angel Food Cake? The Angel Food Cake does not sit overnight and gets cooked right on the stove. Assuming you are talking about the Creme Brulee French Toast, white bread would definitely get soggy so I would NOT use it. The other bread will not get soggy soaking overnight as it should be 2 day old and becoming a little stale. It will be wet when soaked overnight but after being baked, it is perfect! You can only use a regular baking tray if it has a rimmed edge or else the brown sugar mixture will spill right off of it. You could also use 2 9×13 casserole dishes. Hope this helps!!

OMG, I made this for Christmas brunch and everyone was going CRAAAZY over it!! It got RAAAVE reviews!! So light and airy and delicious and easy to make! It went right in my favorites folder!! The only thing I ‘changed’ was that I made 1 1/2 batches of the strawberry syrup because we love our sauces and it was a perfect amount. And Jennifer, I’ve said this before but your photos just ROCK! You make me want to eat everything you make!! haha Thank you for all the time and effort you put into your site and thanks so much for the DELICIOUS recipes! What breakfast recipe of yours will I make next? : )

    • Jen says

Yesssss! Thank you so much for making my day Kathy! I love hearing that this recipe was such a beloved hit! It is an old recipe from my first year of blogging but still one of our favorites too. Thanks you for your kind words and for making my recipes! Happy New Year! xo
